This is your low hanging fruit to earning coverage and actually sharing stuff that people are already talking about and they already care about.
In this video, I’m going to show you how you can newsjack from a reporter’s perspective.

Hi, I’m Christina Nicholson and I help businesses and brands all over the world earn more media exposure without spending any money on ads so they build that know, like and trust factor pretty quickly.
And in this video, I am talking about newsjacking.
How to Use Newsjacking to Earn Media Coverage
So, newsjacking is basically jumping on something that’s already happening. It’s already newsworthy and you are just making it relevant to you, your business and your brand so you can ride that news wave and get coverage.
And the example that I’m going to share is a real-life example of how this happened when I was working as a reporter at NBC in Miami so it makes it easy for you to apply in your own business.
But to do this, let’s cover the basics.
1. Pay attention to what’s happening in your industry.
First, you have to be paying attention to what is happening in your industry.
If you don’t know what’s happening in the news, then you don’t know what to newsjack.
2. Find a way to expand on the news story that’s already being told.
Number two: you want to find a way to expand on the story that’s already being told.
So sometimes in news, we can beat dead horse. It seems like we’re doing the same story over and over and over again.
Really we’re doing the same story but it has a different angle and if people are already talking about, if it’s getting a lot of views, a lot of listens, a lot of watches… if it’s getting a lot of clicks, then we’re going to keep telling that story, but we’re going to tell it with a different angle and that is where you come in to newsjack.
What is happening in the news RIGHT NOW that you could newsjack?
Now before I get to actually earning the coverage and tell me something that is happening in the news right now that you could newsjack.
Yes. I want you to tell me in the comments, I am putting you to work. So you are going to have to do some Googling if you are not up to date with what is happening in the news as it relates to your industry.
Hey, we’re all here to learn, but learning means nothing if we don’t implement. So in the comments, let me know what is happening in the news right now that could relate to your business or your brand. Let me know in the comments.
3. Pitch it!
Step three: Now you pitch it!
Because let me tell you, if you don’t pitch this story, your competitor’s going pitch it and then you’re going to see your competitor in the news earning all of that publicity for free, and it’s going to make you mad. So you need to jump on it and pitch it.
Now let me tell you how this worked.
When I was a reporter in Miami, six years ago now, a star from Glee died. His name was Corey Monteith and he died of a heroin overdose.
I was doing the story where I interviewed a doctor or an addiction specialist and we talked about heroin and how heroin was like a drug in the eighties and now it’s making a comeback and that’s how this man died.
Now I’m not exactly sure how we got this person. I don’t know if he newsjacked what everybody was already talking about and found a way to make it local or I don’t know if somebody at my assignment desk did a Google search and found him and called him up to localize this story.
So that right there is a lesson in two things.
You need to be pitching yourself and you need to make yourself be easily found online and on Google.
If people want to reach out to you, if they want to find you, can they find you when they do a Google search?
So I was interviewing this guy and we were talking about, again, addiction, heroin, how it’s not just for people living on the streets, but you know, these big Hollywood stars are doing it.
This was a big national story – had no local times, really. We’re talking about a Hollywood star and I’m living in South Florida, but it was a story that everybody was talking about.
So this doctor, this addiction specialist, he newsjacks that story because it had relevance to him and his expertise and he got coverage on an NBC, owned and operated station in Miami, which is the 16th largest market in the country for free.
So that’s just one example of how newsjacking works.
I can give you plenty of others. I’d probably have and many other YouTube videos, so poke around my channel and make sure you check out those.

Now before we go, I’m not going to let you off the hook.
I want to know what is happening in the news right now that you could newsjack. You might have to take a pause and actually searched for this cause maybe you were not up to date on everything happening in your industry.
I suggest you always be, because again, this is your low hanging fruit. So let me know in the comments what is happening in the news right now that you can newsjack.
